The Inevitability of Abandonment

by Shaun Terry

Human Heart

Contiguous flesh and bone
shatter into
millions of sharp, spiny pieces.
The heart hums a hopeful song
for something
it’s never held.
The song aims to ensnare a heart
to sing along.

A three-year old wails in her bedroom,
going between relieving anguish
and searching for a sign
of other human life:
hoping for someone
to present respite,
to let her fragile,
naive heart know
everything will be okay.

But everyone eventually leaves
this little room that was
carved out
over all these years
to hold some special person
willing to be held there.
It is never filled for very long.
It’s empty and shrinking.
